1903 Sault Star article - DESBARATS - A child of John Hattens of Tarbutt took ill with cholera Morpheus Saturday night and died the next day at noon just before the doctors arrival. Whooping cough is the order of the day round here. The old as well as the young are troubled with it. Miss Burgess, who is carrying on a millinery and dressmaking establishment here is doing a rustling business. She is giving good satisfaction. Mr. Stewart, late of the Soo, Ont., our enterprising harness maker, has also built himself a residence where he and his father are carrying on shoe making business as well. We wish them both every success. Mr J. F. Dowdle, our enterprising new merchant, is doing a good business here. He is renting a place belonging to Mr. Angus McDonald. He is fixing up the back part for a residence. We have a new lathe mill here. Angus McDonald is carrying it on. He is enlarging so as to saw the small timber into lumber. The play Hiawatha is still in full blast. Hundreds go there to see the play and are well satisfied with the sight. It keeps the livery busy bringing the passengers to and from the train. Desbarats, you see, is bound to boom.
