1914 Briefly News of the second week of December: All former citizens of Roane County are encouraged to attend a reading hosted by the Roane County Society. The society was formed March 13, 1911. Several Chattanoogans will be reading papers regarding the history of Roane which is known as the “mother county of lower East Tennessee.” Soaking rains cause the river to rise to 22.7 feet. Until the high water recedes, work on the Market Street Bridge is delayed. The delay lasted three days. In the case of the McCamey heirs vs. Cummings, et al (which included a large number of homeowners) a decision was made in the Supreme Court. The case was dismissed when the judge decided an old statute regarding illegitimate heirs was considered invalid. The Lookout Mountain homeowners as well as the National Park were no doubt relieved by this decision. Southern Refractories (on Mission Ridge) gets the contract for all the fire brick required for the coke ovens being built in Alton Park by Chattanooga Gas & Coal Products. The large order means jobs for hundreds of local men to help fill the order.
