#1942 My uncle just passed away tonight. I saw him at a family reunion just this August and he was alive and well. We found out he had cancer last week. My family suggested I go visit him this past weekend in the hospital, but at first I said I didnt have time because I had to work and had a major project due the next day. Then we learned the cancer spread to his lungs and there was nothing more the hospital could do for him. My family said he asked about me, and that it would mean a lot to him to go see him. I went to visit him that day. He was in pain, but in high spirits, talking about my family and how he was going home in a couple days so he could get better at home, rather than in a hospital. I didnt really know what to say...what do you say to family who probably knows theyre dying? I told him I loved him, and he told me he loved me. And it was probably the easiest, most heartfelt I love you exchange Ive ever had in my life. Later, he told my family he was really surprised and happy to see me. He died three days after. Im glad hes no longer suffering, and Im even more glad I got to see him one last time, especially because his health deteriorated so quickly, and I might not have gotten to say goodbye if I remained selfish and too busy. Im still in a bit of shock, but I guess the reason for sharing this is to tell you that no matter how busy you think you are, or how complicated or stressful or unfair you think your life is, its all really trivial. Make time for your family, be nice to them, and tell them you love them. Theyre all you really have and need in this life, and they may be gone before youre ready for it.
