1943- Bassist Chris White (The Zombies) has a birthday. 1945 - Love frontman Arthur Lee is born Arthur Taylor Porter in Memphis. 1946 - Peter Wolf (Peter Blankfeld) enters the world. The Bronx-born singer grows up to be the frontman for the J. Geils Band. 1946 - Procol Harum’s Matthew Fisher starts his life in in Addiscombe, Croydon, Surrey, England. His Hammond organ dominates the group’s ’67 international hit, A Whiter Shade Of Pale.” 1955 - It’s still Rock ‘n’ Roll to me. Carl Perkins’ “Blue Suede Shoes” enters the Rhythm & Blues charts. It’s the first time a Country & Western artist lands on the R & B charts. 1964 - The Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand” battles “She Loves You” for the top spot on the U.S. charts. Beatlemania is off and running. 1966- Tina Turner records her vocals for “River Deep Mountain High.” Producer Phil Spector spends $22,000 on the song. Ike & Tinas version stiffs in the U.S. but rules the U.K. chart. 1967- Randy Guss (Toad The Wet Sprocket) is born. 1968 - The definitive (and lengthy – 16:51) version of “Toad” is recorded at Fillmore West in San Francisco (2nd show). The original studio-take appears on Cream’s debut “Fresh Cream.” This version is found on the studio/live “Wheels Of Fire,” the first double-album to go platinum. 1969 - The Who’s “Pinball Wizard” is released in the U.K. It’s the first song from the Rock opera “Tommy.” 1970- Simon & Garfunkel’s epic “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” is the only song keeping Creedence Clearwater Revival’s two-sided hit “Travelin’ Band”/”Who’ll Stop The Rain” out of the top spot on the U.S. pop chart. 1973 - “Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory” goes gold as Traffic winds down. 1975 - David Bowie releases “Young Americans.” 1976- A likeness of Elton John is put on display in Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. 1983- Stevie Wonder enters the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York.
