1980. The Comic Strip at The City Varieties, Leeds. Id seen them on TV a few months earlier on a show called Boom, Boom Out Go The Lights so four or five of us got tickets. The night before it had been Matthew Pinnells 18th birthday, lots & lots of beer had been consumed & Id been feeling more than a little queasy all day. On the night Neil Coopers grandparents kindly offered to take us into Leeds, which was good of them but they mustve regretted it when I proceeded to projectile vomit over the back of Neils grandma. I apologised profusely & for many years after they still asked about that polite young man who was ill in their car. Anyway even though I felt like I was at deaths door & stunk of sick the show was the funniest thing Id ever seen live. Alexi Sayle, French & Saunders, The Outer Limits & 20th Century Coyote which was Rik & Ade. They stole the show. Firstly Riks radical poet character with poem about Vanessa then with Ade as The Dangerous Brothers, the prototype for Bottom. Id never seen anything like it before & havent since & sadly I wont again.
