1987. New to LA and dreaming big, sat in the audience at Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. For comics, the venue is like Yankee Stadium for a ballplayer. That night it was electric. The headliner: Dennis Miller from SNL. Middle act: Dana Carvey rocking it with his new character, The Church Lady. Opener: a young looking unknown, whose opening line was, My name is David Spade. Im TEN. My mom is grocery shopping at Ralphs and dropped me here. About two years later, comedian George Wallace got me an audition at the club. Been headlining there ever since, and never fails to bring an extra bit of reflective tingle when backstage about to come out to that iconic room. Still profoundly grateful and humbled. Thankful to Mike Lacy the owner for building such a classic place for the best to perform, George for taking a chance and putting in a word for me and Richard Barrett for running such a great room, overflowing with class and integrity. Hitting it one more time tonight. First show sold out, so they added another at 930. If you are in So Cal, come down and share the experience.
