1997 WAS THE LAST TIME LAKE SUPERIOR COMPLETELY FROZE OVER. Some might say it happened again in 2003 when the majority was froze over, except there were a few western areas along the Minnesota shoreline that still were open water. But why let the facts get in the way of a good story…. those years it was March when they froze over… As of today, January 22 2014 Lake Superior is 53% ice covered. How...ever there has been a dramatic shift since New Year’s eve when Lake Superior was only 4% covered with ice !! There is a large area of open water over much of the eastern half of the lake which allows the lake effect snows to continue falling on U.P. communities from Marquette, Munising, Grand Marais, Paradise and the Sault. See the attached photo, it shows how January 9th of the previous eight years compares to 2014. We are freezing up a lot faster. It’s a good thing we have figured out how to control global warming and only have to solve the climate change issue…… At this point in 2014, the Great Lakes are currently 48% ice covered. Lake Erie is 94% ice covered, it is also the shallowest lake and warms up the most in the summer. Next in line is Graham Real Estate Good Hart - Lake Michigan Real Estate Huron at 69% as there is open water in the center of the lake yet. Lake Superior is next and now over half covered in ice at 53%. Lake Michigan is 33% ice covered as many shoreline areas down to Chicago are frozen but there is still a lot of open water once you get offshore. Lake Ontario has the least amount of ice with 24% of the lake ice covered. Spring is around the corner.
