2 January 2015 Dear All: Do we still have a need for a SEBA? Much as I would like to start the new year on a positive note but the news of the untimely death a day after Christmas kept haunting me of that staff worker who was nearing retirement and connected with the UP Food Service. It’s a long story but the crux of the matter is money that could have been utilized for proper medication. The mandate earned thru certification election (CE) gives the lucky or winning union, in no uncertain terms provided for under IRR of EO 180, the rights and privileges as the sole and exclusive bargaining agent (SEBA) to negotiate with management for a collective negotiation agreement (CNA). The year 2014 has just ended without the new 5-year CNA. Did our SEBA, the lucky albeit happy AUPWU, made the proper stand and the right representation with the UP management on the matter? What has happened to those proposed additional benefits that the AUPWU has been heralding with audacity that the new agreement will include a 50,000 signing bonus to be given in installment for a 5-year period, the birthday cash gift, etc.? Or do we take those things as another pie in the sky that are so highly prevalent in elections (CE) in order to be the SEBA then forget everything (CNA) in the end? Thank you. Truly yours, Danny
