2 John 4-9; Luke 17:26-37 Remember the wife of Lot. People sometimes engage in empty debates about whether Noah’s flood “really happened.” Look at Jesus’ take on it: It wasn’t the flood, but our complacency that drowned us. The same goes for Sodom. Was it the wrath of God? No, our own wasting indifference. Kurt Vonnegut, in Slaughterhouse-Five, memorably redeems Lot’s wife: “But she did look back, and I love her for that, because it was so human. So she was turned into a pillar of salt.” The salt of her own tears. Watch for these strange events, past and predicted, as Jesus approaches Jerusalem, another city under judgment. The apostles are already desperate: “Where, Lord,” will the Day of the Lord be revealed? To face that day, John’s plea in the first reading is all we need: “Let us love one another.” With all my heart I seek you; let me not stray from your commands.
