2 WEEK UPDATE: Today the team (psychologist, dietician, occupational therapist, parent) met to discuss the treatment so far and discuss expectations and set goals. The psychologist was pleased with his rapid response to the latest approach (opening his mouth, placing food in if he resists and not allowing him to leave the session until he takes every bite) Some children take up to 6 sessions to adjust. Emmett broke halfway through the first session. He also was successful during his second session of the day and did not require assistance opening for the food. The dietician has concern regarding Emmetts weight loss. Tomorrow he will focus on drinking carnation with the occupational therapist in an effort to boost calories. When Emmett finishes the program, he will need to eat 3 meals/day the same way that he is eating in the program. Substituting non-preferred for preferred food choices is not an option. He will need to be able to drink 3 supplements each day to maintain the calories to maintain his weight. Over the next few days, Emmett will be introduced to bananas, macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes and broccoli. If Emmett is able to succeed with those items, he will begin the exit process...which includes training for parents and a trial day at home. An official time line was not set today, and that is perfectly fine. Learning how to juggle expectations with reality was very difficult over the last 2 weeks. As we move forward, we have the results of the first 2 weeks as encouragement. Emmett began eating off of utensils. He ate pasta for the first time. He ate red sauce. He ate regular scoop-able yogurt. He began his work accepting applesauce. And most impressive: He is eating 4 different foods in one meal session. Foods of different temperature and texture, and he is doing it. Thanks for all the support!!
