#2 out of 3. The George Rogers Clark Memorial, eighty feet high and one hundred and eighty feet wide, is as impressive as some of the memorials we have seen in Washington, D.C. Above the Doric columns, an inscription reads, The Conquest of the West: George Rogers Clark and the Frontiersmen of the American Revolution. Inside the rotunda are seven murals and a bronze statue of George Rogers Clark. Three of Clarks quotations are inscribed on the memorial. One is Great things have been effected by a few great men well conducted. Inside the visitors center, Greg and I saw a video of George Rogers Clarks capture of Henry Hamilton, the Lieutenant Governor of British Canada, and his men. Also within the park, is a statue of Francis Vigo, the Revolutionary War hero, who assisted George Roger Clark and the American cause of winning the the region between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River from the British. Nearby is the Basilica of St Francis. A statue of Pierre Gibault, a Jesuit priest in the Northwest Territory, stands in front of the basilica. Gilbaut is the American patriot and priest who convinced his followers to support George Rogers Clark and his men in the American cause. Next: Red Skelton’s Museum of Comedy.
