2 seconds ago It’s difficult for majority of Somali asylum seekers and refugees to find employment aside from informal trading, these traders provide accessible, convenient access to goods including essential every day food items and cellular phone airtime to the most marginalised and deserving citizen of this country in the informal settlements and townships in South Africa. The ongoing crackdown exclusively targeting Somali Spaza owners, by the police and local municipalities in most of the townships and in suburbs like Mayfair is discriminatory, unlawfully and tantamount to depriving the concerned spaza owners their only means of financial support hence leaving them destitute. We have received complaints from some of the affected Somali Spaza Owners, some who were given a hefty fine of Rand One Hundred Thousand(R 100,000) or a sentence of Six Months for not complying with municipal by-laws, we are taking this matter to Court courts to declare these shop closures unlawful. If you are an affected Somali National, living in Johannesburg and its sorrounding, kindly liaise with us on our facebook page or on 011 075 558 5/ 083 439 984 8
