20,000 Americans live with hemophilia, a condition that prevents the blood from clotting easily after a cut or injury. Patients are also more susceptible to internal bleeding, which can damage joints, organs and tissue. Gene therapy, however, has proven effective for some patients with hemophilia B. Researchers have found that by adding the missing protein to a specially-engineered virus, patients can improve to the point where they hardly ever bleed.
