20/11/2014 - Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Commerce On November 18, 2014 at the Sofitel in Phnom Penh, H.E. Sun Chanthol presided over the 2nd Cambodian Rice Festival organized by the Cambodia Rice Federation in cooperation with the Cambodia Tourism Federation, and Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra. H.E. Jean Francois Cautain, Ambassador of the European Union, H.E. Alassane Sow, Country Director of the World Bank in Cambodia, Mr. Hor Soneath, Head of Office of IFC Cambodia, H.E. Ty Sokun., Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery, Mr. Sok Puthyvuth, President of Cambodia Rice Federation, Mr. Alain Fortin, First Counselor of French Embassy, and other representatives of the farmer communities, rice millers, rice exporters and students were in attendance. In his remarks, Senior Minister Sun talked about the efforts of the RGC in attracting more foreign investment to enhance the paddy rice warehousing and milling capacity in order to increase the competitiveness of the Cambodian rice in the emerging markets. He added that the Chinese government has recently set to loan Cambodia over $300 million to be used to build more 40 warehouses equipped with dryers capable of storing at least one million tons of Cambodias paddy. The Ministry of Commerce is working on the branding of Cambodian agricultural products through international trade promotions strategies and geographical indication initiatives. Minister Sun expressed the strong commitment of the RGC in bringing online automation to the system of Certificate of Origin as well as moving forward with reform initiatives that focus on streamlining facilitation to exporters and expanding market access for Cambodian rice and other agricultural products. He noted that the Festival is an event to encourage the farmer communities and rice millers to participate in national rice competitions, which will help insure that our best high quality rice is exported to international markets.
