20 Calls in 20 Days for Beaverdam Farms If you think we should be able to buy chicken from a farmer who raises them naturally, processes them humanely, and builds community read on... I usually hate and avoid politics. But it offends my sensibilities when two kids from the Delta start a thriving business that is about to be squashed by out of date policy. Many of you have been following Beaverdam Farms, Dustin and Ali. We buy their chicken every week through a business model called a buying club where we order what we want online on Monday and pick it up at a conveniently located drop off spot in our community the next Monday. Recently a bit of policy has been added to the poultry retail rules that prohibits small poultry farmers from selling birds off the farm at buying clubs or farmers markets by the MS Dept of Agriculture if they are not inspected. There is no facility small farmers can take their birds to for inspection in the State. The Dept of Ag is willing to listen to us! They will consider any change we propose. They will consider it a lot more seriously if lots of us support it. We are presenting a petition through the MS Dev Authority that would remove this impediment to small entrepreneurial business growth. Once the petition is filed, we would like to thank the Department of Ag for supporting small, entrepreneurial farmers. 20 calls in 20 days. The calls should be positive in nature, and explain why we are so thankful to be able to access healthy food easily. If you would like to be on the call list, please sign up below. You will receive an email reminder the day before your call day with the names and numbers of four important Department of Ag members who can change this policy.
