20 Men Beheaded in South Sudan Authorities in South Sudan are investigating circumstances under which 20 decapitated bodies were dumped at Juba Teaching Hospital, raising fears of fresh atrocities in the war-torn country. By Dickens Honeywell Okello 03/06/2014 14:29:00 Juba civilians entering a UN compound following an outbreak of clashes in December 2013 Daniel Wuor Joak, the Executive Director, African Centre for Human Advocacy (ACHA) told Chimpreports on Tuesday that the shocking development followed concerns by residents at 107 residential area in Juba town that 20 young men had disappeared mysteriously. “Apparently, their headless bodies were later recovered at Juba Teaching Hospital unclaimed,” said Joak. Government’s information desk did not swiftly respond to our email on the matter. However, Joak said, some few weeks ago, President Salva Kiir and a number of Nuer senior politicians including Rachel Nyadak - Deputy Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Hon. Manassah Magok Rundial - Speaker of South Sudan National Assembly, Hon. James Kok Ruai, Hon. Riek Gai - Minister of Health and several others pleaded to thousands of IDPs at Tongpiny and Jabel Kujur UNMISS camps to return back to their homes, saying peace and normalcy had returned to the town. “Basically, some of the IDPs were innocently convinced and took the decision to return back to their homes without anticipating eminent danger that might be fall them. They went back to their residential quarters due to the harsh conditions at UNMISS camps such as the threat of cholera and waterborne diseases.” It remains unclear who is responsible for the massacre. But the killings point to the high level of insecurity in the country. United Nations Security Council last month sanctioned a senior army officer and rebel commander for reportedly participating in killings of innocent civilians after war broke out in December 2013. Joak said the cruel and painful killings are “unforgiveable crimes and those responsible must be held to account by all means.” He said UNMISS, IGAD, AU, Troika, EU and other world bodies should take the “murdering of these unarmed civilians seriously and hold those responsible to answer for their crimes.” Both the government in Juba, UNMISS or IGAD Verification Team charged with Cessation of Hostilities in South Sudan are yet to issue a report about the incident.
