200-INCH HALE TELESCOPE TRIP We are planning a day trip to the Palomar 200” ‘Cassegrain reflector’ telescope on top of Palomar Mountain. This scope was the largest in the world when assembled in 1948 for 28 years, until the Soviet Union build a larger one with a 238” primary mirror. The Russian one was plagued with quality control problems and located on a mountain with poor visibility. Last February our winter survival bivouac was located only one mile away from this national treasure. You will see how 1930s technology is combined with today’s technology to peer into deep space, and how George Hale was able to plan, finance, and build this remarkable ‘light bucket.’ Be advised, no one looks through this telescope anymore, since the advent of computer technology and CCD cameras. I’m always amazed at how many people living in San Diego have never seen this scope and not aware it’s located here. Please consider going with us and learn about this super scope and out-of-this-world points in the exhibit hall. Here’s the scope of it all, please focus on the following: When: Saturday, 21 September 2013 Time: 08:30 hours Meet: Outside the gate, 147th Combat Communications Sq., CA ANG, 7288 Convoy Terrace, San Diego (our Tuesday night meeting location) Cost: $5.00 Uniform: Battle Dress Uniform (BDU). If you do not have the BDU yet, wear civilian clothes. Bring: Signed CAPF 31, sack lunch (no eatery there), water (drinking fountains available, camera (optional) Return: 16:00 hours Carpool: We are looking for parents to help drive and attend. If you live north along I-15, please let the Project Officer know so that you can be picked up on one of the off ramps. Comments: We plan on meeting up at the gift shop at 10:00 hours, purchase our tickets for the 11:00 hour tour, take a quick look around the exhibit hall, then a short hike to the observatory. A docent will describe the engineering feat to get this large piece of glass from northern New York to Palomar; telescope ops; George Hale; astronomical research; and other telescopes in the surrounding site. After the tour, eat lunch and then back to the exhibit hall for a more in-depth study. RSVP/POC: Please RSVP Major Dennis Ammann, AE Officer at: (619) 247-2457 or airplane.kook@gmail
