2000ad Prog 1914 REVIEW. In Orbit Every Wednesday. Dark Justice continues to be Dredds best strip in ages, with the combination of John Wagners excellently dark and character-driven script, accompanied with Greg Staples awesome artwork, which is both creepily effective and so lifelike with its dark colours and bold outlines. The opening is pretty atmospheric, with the Dark Judges now on the loose on the Mayflower. Their bloody destruction is brief but still brutal. Judge Death has always been an imposing and scary creation, and here he is absolutely terrifying. Dredd and Anderson meanwhile, lead a skeleton crew of six Verminators and a device called the Suction Trap, capable of holding all of the Dark Judges on board a shuttle to the Mayflower. Something tells me its not going to be that easy... Ulysses Sweet is still as weird and as mad as a box of multi-coloured pupkittens as youd hope. It doesnt seem to have much of a story - well, a thin one about Sweet looking for his original Bio Chip and Sweet going violent crazy on some thugs, but disengage your brain and go along for the ride. There are some brilliant one-liners this week and one hilarious panel showing Sweet nodding and pointing about the kid being right. Its over-the-top cartoon violence and fast paced action might not be for everyone, but the grey artwork by Paul Marshall is sublime and Guy Adams script keeps things rollicking along. Orlok is becoming more and more intriguing. So East-Meg One isnt the glamorous and happy place many believe. It is split up with gang terrorises, all wanting to control it all. The Gruber Combine, Die Weiss Russe and the biggest, La Reine Rouge being the biggest. Orlok is hiding there under a new identity called Oberon and he is feared throughout the city. His reputation is being noticed however, when he tries to take out members of the La Reine Rouge gang. He has been summoned, and it doesnt look like its going to be good news either. Loving the direction this is going on. Orlok seems to be a guy you love to hate, and Arthur Wyatts script is full of great twists and turns. Loving Jake Lynchs art style too, as the black and white art really suits the moody panels and shadows. The Order is shaping up to be a little gem. It is certainly a lot better than Black Shuck was from last year, and the story builds more momentum this week. Anna Kohl and her men reach Prague and are almost captured by the Teutonic Knights, but manage to escape into a bar. The location of the Wurms seems to have been found... But is it too late for them? There is a lovely segment in this episode which sees Old John recount his time serving with Siegfried and his brother Henri, fighting the Wurms. Then he forgets as time is taking its toll on him. After all, he is an old man and has been through a lot. Ritterstahl continues to be such a great creation - half man and half robot, who has been around for centuries and has maybe gone to the future too by the sounds of it. Love the bits of information we are given each week - just enough to keep us wondering what his plans actually are. Fab watery art by John Burns and Kek-Ws script is brilliant too. Savage is brilliant as always. Grinders is shaping up into a brilliant story, with the Hammersteins trying to control the chaos of riot in the streets, warning the people to stand down. The people arent listening however, and Bill tries to intervene. Sue, being controlled by Howard Quartz, is observing the carnage and Bill coming ever closer. Theres a great moment with the Hammersteins that evoke whats to come from the A.B.C Warriors, but it doesnt help Bill Savage who is captured and is taken to see an old friend. My moneys on it being Quartz but Pat Mills script may just surprise me. A special mention must go to Letterer Annie Parkhouse and Ellie De Ville, who do fantastic work on the letters going into the speech bubbles each week. They dont usually get the credit they deserve, so well done on doing amazing work in the Galaxys Greatest!
