2013 ‘Fosu Exams’ held By: Romeo Adzah Dowokpor Basic and tertiary schools in the Mepe traditional area in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region over the weekend held their annual speech and prize giving day christened ‘Fosu Exams’. The exams which was instituted in 1967 by an indigene of the town, Mr. Christian Kodzo Fosu, to promote competition among schools in the area in the pursuit of academic excellence,saw hundreds of elated school children gathered last Saturday July 13,2013 at the Roman Catholic Church to cheer on their respective schools and awardees The chairman of the event, Professor Koku Amedeker, lecturer and Dean of Faculty of Science Education at the University of Education, Winneba , challenged the students to be studious and disciplined by shying away from negative attitudes and associations that would impede their academic growth. The university don, also a native of Mepe, encouraged students who could not receive prizes this year to gird their loins in preparation for next year’s exams in order to win awards to do themselves and their schools proud. Mr. Amedeker expressed worry over the winning of most of the awards by private schools in the area and charged heads and teachers of public schools to step up their efforts by improving on the standard of teaching to the students which would eventually make the Fosu Exams more competitive. On his part, the octogenarian -chartered accountant, Mr. Fosu who graced this year’s ceremony, stated how proud he was witnessing many beneficiaries of the Fosu Exams since its establishment over four decades ago and others whom he trained have distinguished themselves in various careers and contributing their quota to the development of Ghana. He mentioned the former minister of interior under the erstwhile Kufour administration and past chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, as one of the illustrious sons of the land whom have had the benefit of his training and benevolence Congress 97, an association of graduates from Junior High Schools in 1997 from Mepe and its surrounding villages whom have been organising the exams and the speech and prize giving day since 2007, have erected a monument in honour of Mr. Fosu in the town. Speaking to The Republic, the secretary to Congress 97 and the Examination Committee, Mr. Paschal Fornyikpor revealed that his association has also written to the Board of Governors of the Mepe St. Kizito Secondary Technical School requesting for the naming of one of the halls in the school after him(Mr. Fosu) in order to immortalize his name for the great contributions he has made for the town in the area of education. When The Republic caught up with Miss Mawufemor Fornyikpor, a class 4 pupil of the Holy Christ Preparatory School adjudged as winner of Best Girl Child and overall 2013 Best Candidate Awards who had prizes in English Language, Mathematics and General Paper, she advised her colleagues to take their studies seriously and also obey their parents. therepublicgh
