This is how astronomers first figured out to a degree how big and how far away things in the sky were, by timing how long it took to traverse from first to fully visible and since we know how long it takes for the earth to rotate 360 degrees we know how may degrees it traverses in the time it takes to rise. This video is substantially sped up since it takes about 8 minutes or two degrees of arc from first appearance to fully visible.
