2014-09-21 A Contagious Faith - 1 Pet. 4 (ron Riley)-1 In a classic episode from the classic TV series from the 1960s, The Andy Griffith Show, Andy Taylor, the sheriff of Mayberry, is out of town. His deputy, Barney Fife, is in charge, and he has deputized the local mechanic who is named Gomer. The two deputies are walking down the street one evening when they notice that someone is robbing the towns bank. They hide behind a car. They are afraid and dont know what to do. Finally, Gomer looks at Barney and says excitedly, Shazam! We need to call the police. In utter exasperation, Barney shoots back: We are the police!” Perhaps this describes the church. We look around at a morally bankrupt world today, at lost souls heading for hell, and billions of lives untouched by the good news of Jesus and say, “Shazam! We need to ask God for help.” And then we read the words from our Lord and Savior, Jesus, “You go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You teach them all that I have taught you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) We are the police, we are the cavalry, we are the ones who have been called to take the message of salvation to our world.
