2014 CROSSFIT & MORE - PART 4 I took up weight training 59 years ago in 1955, and I’ve always kept in good shape, I bike and swim and keep some weights in my den. Valerie was amused that all the equipment in my barn gym is covered in animal print. I must admit that I have not kept up with all the new trends like TRX, Spinning, Zumba and CrossFit. My book FOREVER FIT was published in 1983 so it contains exercises from that era. Two grandsons and a granddaughter became personal trainers. (Trivia: About 40+ years ago I was visiting my parents in Houston, TX who had bought a new blood pressure cuff. I offered to help them test it by stepping up and down on their concrete back steps. My dad’s response was, “That girl is going to drive me crazy with all that exercise stuff!”) Here are a few facts about CrossFit that you might not know. 1. The very first CrossFit workouts were for the sheriff’s department. 2. There is still a strong law enforcement/military connection. 3. The workouts are named after women because they “wreak havoc!” 4. Other workouts are named to commemorate fallen soldiers. 5. CrossFit has a philanthropic side. 6. Not just anyone can open his or her own box. 7. The majority of CrossFitters are women.
