2015 NEW YEAR ADVICE (Written by Brady Gobin 1/1/2015) Three vital things I have learned from my elderly Health Care experience as a Rehab CNA that we should all heed to as we grow older: (Note: These axioms are for those with sound minds still. None of this applies to the hardships inherent with dementia, Alzheimers, mental illness, ect.) #3. Always keep being a person willing to learn. They may be young, inexperienced, culturally different or even a stranger, but everyone knows something you dont know, and others very likely know something that can truly help your life to be better. #2. Remember to be considerate and kind, and to FOREVER use your good manners. ALL requests need to be spoken kindly and be bracketed with a Please and Thank you. Consideration of the caregiver will inspire them to do their work because they WANT to, not just because they are OBLIGATED to fulfill your reguests (this applies to family and paid caregivers). Your age has elevated you to a place of respect, but not past humanity. #1. Abandon all stubborness. For every degree to which you are stubborn, your quality of life will deminish. Heed the advice and warnings of those more experienced. Listen carefully and consider the instructions of ones not medicated. Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zones in order to cling to your quality of life as long as you can. These 3 things can help us to better enjoy all our days as we advance in years. Many of my more experieced health-care community friends can say way more on each of these, and have seen 1st hand the value of these axioms. May you all live well this year. Enjoy your lives!
