2015: Nigerian students mobilise for Jonathan’s re-electiona 2015 Umbrella body of all students in the country, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has vowed to work for the reelection of President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term come 2015. NANS said this decision was borne out of the commitment of the Jonathan administration to the development of the nation’s education sector. Speaking on behalf of NANS in Asaba, the Delta State capital at the weekend during the national convention to elect new officers, its out- going President, Comrade Yinka Gbadebo, said the decision was to appreciate the present administration for committing over N200 billion to the education sector. Maintaining that students would do everything possible, as far it conforms with democratic tenet to ensure that President Jonathan returns to the nation’s seat of power to continue with his transformation agenda for the general good of the Nigerian students, Gbadebo, also used the medium to inaugurate “Nigeria Students Transformation Vanguard,” a campaign platform that will ensure victory for Jonathan in 2015, expressing that it was Jonathan all the way. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students matter, Comrade Jude Imagwe, who was invited to monitor the convention, also reiterated Federal Government’s commitment to provide three million jobs for young graduates in the next 12 months, appealing to the students to key into the transformation agenda. Gbadebo said: “Past Presidents in our nation’s history destroyed NANS and all form of students’ unionism. Today, we found ourselves in a situation where the educational sector is in a total shamble, where hostels look like poultry and library without books; a situation where lecturers demand money for marks; but in the last three years President Jonathan started the process of transformation with the injection of N200 billion into the educational sector. He has shown that he appreciates the youths of the country, so we are giving him our support and encouragement to continue in office come 2015.” Meanwhile, ahead of the 2015 gubernatorial contest in the state, NANS has been urged to support candidates with track record of pragmatic and innovative developmental programmes that will in the final analysis have positive impact on the electorate. Former Speaker of Delta State of Assembly, Rt Hon Victor Ochei, said this when Zone B (South- East and South-South states) of NANS paid him a solidarity visit in Asaba. NANS Zone B coordinator, Mr Ifeanyi Chukwu, said that their visit stemmed from the need to encourage and identify with an aspirant whose impressive and prolific antecedents will assuredly add value to the lives of Deltans and humanity. Ochei posited that as the future leaders of the country, it behoves on them to always ensure that they support and vote in candidates who have the interest of the polity at heart. He further requested the students to equally ensure that President Jonathan secures a second term, as continuity will engender the much valued upliftment of the Nigerian masses, adding that as staunch believers in his ‘Yes, We Believe’ campaign mantra, he will strive to justify the confidence they reposed in him by the solidarity visit, pledging not to deviate from the expectation of the electorate.
