2015, The Year of the Recalls: What are recalls an indicator of? The year 2015 was the all time leader in vehicles recalled in the United States of America. More than 63.5 million recalls were issued for vehicles in 2015 in 800 separate recall campaigns, more then twice the all-time record of 2004. Virtually every car was recalled at least once. GM alone accounted for more recalls then for all vehicles in 2004 with over 30 million vehicle recalls in 84 separate campaigns. Interestingly, the criteria for safety has gone up a great deal by the Institute for Highway Safety and more vehicles achieved its approval then in years, and highway deaths are at an all time low. So we are the safest we have ever been with by far the most recalls. So what are recalls measuring? More then anything they are measuring the low level of risk we expect from automakers in the US who are expected to recall at any chance of accidents caused by a defect. Most recalls are not associated with any accidents. This is the new recall culture in the United States and at the least we should judge recalls on a case by case basis for what they reveal--serious problems in the company or extraordinary care for the customer?
