Air Nam plane grounded Floris Steenkamp Air Namibia left 240 passengers bound for Germany stranded in Windhoek on Sunday night, after a faulty component grounded the national air carrier’s Airbus A340 on the Chief Hosea Kutako International Airport. Frustrated passengers, who expected to be in the air by 21h00, were instead booked into hotels just before midnight on Sunday, as Air Namibia awaited a new component to be flown in from Frankfurt with one of its scheduled return flights. This was confirmed by the air carrier’s General Manager for Commercial Services, Xavier Masule. Masule confirmed the delay was for approximately twelve hours, and the faulty component was replaced early on Monday morning which enabled flight SW285 to depart at 09:00 the same day. “The flight could not take off as a result of the faulty component. We ordered a new component but had to await its arrival on another Air Namibia flight,” explained Masule. Passengers on Sunday night said they would miss connecting flights in Frankfurt to other destinations in Europe as a result of the delay. It also added to their travel cost, they said. One passenger, who is a prominent coastal businessman, explained this week he missed an important business appointment at a major industrial safety show in Germany as a result of the flight delay.
