2015 is an election year and public trust in Westminster politicians is at a historic low. All the major parties failed to clean their houses after the expenses scandal, as they were all equally guilty and so couldnt make any political capital out of it. Even though the sums involved were paltry by Latin American or Asian standards of official embezzlement, the betrayal of public trust was enough. Then factor in the Jimmy Saville revelations showing repulsive corruption at the heart of a state institution. Add on the phone-hacking scandals laying bare the malign effect of Murdochs influence on British politics. Then consider the pernicious effect of the internet in spreading gossip, rumours and slander, undermining trust in the body politic and giving endless support for the kind of idiot cynics who think that saying theyre all just pigs in the trough is a profound political statement. Now imagine if the allegations of a secret ring of child rapists and murderers at the heart of the establishment, hidden and covered up by successive generations of the rich and powerful, all start to be proved true.... on the eve of a general election.... in the information age, theres nowhere to hide. It could really kick off on a scale not seen in our lifetimes. Watch this space.
