2015 will see the return of the McLaren / Honda partnership in F1 as they announced the confirmation of a multi year technology partnership, whereby Honda supply engines to the McLaren team. This confirms the open knowledge and speculation that the former long term partners were to re- unite. Honda have had a long history in F1, ending in 2008 with the departure of their works team. They have had a long history of partnership with McLaren which included Ayrton Senna who won 2 championships with Honda engined McLarens. Their partnership with McLaren 1988-92 saw the success of winning 4 joint championships. Current McLaren driver, Jenson Button drove for the Honda works team and scored their first works team win in 39 years with his win in the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. The re united pairing will be called Honda-McLaren and information released states that the Japanese R&D facility has already made significant progress with the new V6 1.6 turbo charged F1 engine ready to meet the new regulations for the 2015 season. The 2015 partnership will see the end of the Mercedes McLaren pairing, but Martin Whitmarsh paid tribute to the Mercedes contribution. He added that they remained committed to their current Mercedes partnership until the end of 2014 season.
