20th ANNIVERSARY KICK-ASS TAPE: Death to the Core 2 of 3 (Death to the Core) || 12 of 20 (Overall) Hester Prynne -- As Blood Runs Black [Editors note: As Blood Runs Black just released a new album entitled Ground Zero. Buy it!] My decision to have the fourth track off of ABRBs Allegiance album represent the band in this complilation was made with the narrowest of margins. In Dying Days, My Fears Have Become Phobias, and Strife (Chug Chug) are all worthy of inclusion, but it was ultimately the musical diversity of Hester Prynne that earned the track a rightful place on my 20th Anniversary Kick-Ass Tape. Indeed, Hester Prynne is one of those rare tracks that somehow keeps getting better and better as the song progresses. The first 25 seconds are a blistering, blast-beat-driven, almost thrash-metal introduction to what follows; the next 30 seconds, meanwhile, contribute the death metal portion of the track in spades. The song progresses with seemingly endless time changes, impossible technical musicianship, and a legendary breakdown that begins with a growling refrain of INFESTATION! The slowdown that follows is unique in that arpeggios criss-cross over the chugga-chugga brutality of the breakdown. For those interested in an even more savage breakdown, be sure to listen to the aforementioned In Dying Days. It features what I believe to be among the slowest, heaviest breakdowns ever committed to tape by a deathcore band. https://youtube/watch?v=9IIGm-LjuWY
