21-08-2014 DAY 87 IN OFFICE • Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah will address a rally in Chowringhee on September 7, ahead of the by-elections in West Bengal. The rally is scheduled to take place at the conclusion of two days meeting of BJP’s state committee, which begins on September 6 in Kolkata. In a press conference on Tuesday, Mr. Sinha said, “Mr. Shah’s rally in Chowringhee ahead of the by-polls will have a significant impact on the election results”. The by-elections will take place on September 13 and the results will come out on September 16. • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today said that there was no shift in India’s policy of extending strong support to the Palestinian cause, while maintaining good relations with Israel”. She was stressing on government’s commitment to expand ties with the Arab world. While addressing the inaugural session of the First India-League of Arab States Media Symposium she said, We see West Asia as a vital part of Indias extended neighbourhood. The region, situated at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe, is crucial to our national interests in myriad ways. The continued peace and stability in the region is in Indias mutual strategic interest. India has been watching post-Arab Spring developments very closely...India remains ready to provide any support, but strongly believes that it is for the Arab countries to decide their destiny, without any external interference or diktats from outside. • After the government’s commitment to promote its armed forces, Indian companies have showed their eagerness in manufacturing arms, ships and tanks for the military. Analyst estimate, India will spend $250 billion in the next 10 years to promote its Soviet-era military. This is aimed at matching China in terms of defence spending. • The Union government today approved the provision of mobile phone services for 10 extremist-hit states. According to sources, these states are Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The project would be accomplished by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which has already installed towers at 363 locations. Telecommunications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, A sum of Rs.3,216 crore has been allotted for installing 1,836 new base transmission stations”. • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today urged voters to cast their votes in large numbers in the ongoing by-polls across four states, namely Punjab, Karnataka, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. He tweeted, By-polls in various assembly seats across four states are underway. Urging voters in these seats to turnout in large numbers and cast their vote. • PM Narendra Modi will review the performance of major infrastructure sectors in achieving goals at a meeting in next month. According to sources, “The Prime Minister will review the performance of ministries vis-a-vis targets in the first week of September”. • PM Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Nagpur metro rail project. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan missed the function. He cited the reason: “possibility of ruckus by BJP workers”. He was also booed at a recent function at Solapur. • While addressing a rally in Jharkhand PM Narendra Modi today reiterated the need for inclusive growth. He said, “If we want to take India ahead, we have to take the states ahead”. He also dedicated to the nation the Ranchi-Dharamjaygarh-Sipat 765kv inter-regional power transmission line in Jharkhand. This line is the first inter-regional link between eastern region and western region and has been implemented by Central transmission utility Power Grid Corporation at a cost of Rs. 1600 crore.
