21. SLITHER - Writer/director James Gunn has literally made his bones with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, but for anyone who think hes some kind of overnight sensation, they probably missed his wild, crazy and totally disgusting homage to body-morphing sci-fi horror from 2006, SLITHER. A kind of greatest hits compilation of every gore fans favorite nightmarish moments from movies like SHIVERS (aka THEY CAME FROM WITHIN), all the versions of THE BLOB and INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, as well as several other classics, SLITHER tells the touching story of how the alien-influenced relationship between a small-town couple, Grant Grant (MICHAEL ROOKER) and his childhood sweetheart, Starla (ELIZABETH BANKS), manages to infect...uhm, I mean AFFECT everyone around them in some astoundingly gross ways. Only local sheriff Bill Pardy (NATHAN FILLION) can help stop the takeover, and bring the Grants relationship to the conclusion thats required to save everyone. You will need a relatively strong stomach and a sick sense of humor to appreciate this one...which luckily, are already tools most devoted horror fans have in their arsenal, anyway. But the irreverent sense of humor that Gunn has, and that knack for knowing when less is more is just not an appropriate philosophy, was firmly established with SLITHER, before GUARDIANS was a twinkle (or is that a glob of mucus?) in anyones eye.
