24/10/2014 Hi Everyone, Here is the 3rd part of the article from ‘The Living Document’ Volume 2 Spring 2008. Please enjoy and look forward to the 4th part next week. Stage 2: Planning for responsibility It is widely agreed that learning and development only take place when the individual accepts responsibility for his own life. Therefore, the planning stage is an ideal time for the client to take up the reins and think about possible choices and possibilities. What are the key ingredients for responsible and successful planning? In summary: • Clients should only focus on one or two developmental goals. • There should be a realistic time frame – with specific start and end dates. • Goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time based for the client in their situation. • Clients should specify exactly how they will reach their goal. That is, steps must be planned and articulated. • Clients should identify other people they might need to involve to help them achieve their goal. • Clients should identify other people who may need to agree to their plan (for example, a line manager). A Real Life Example Blaine wanted to work overseas. His goal was to secure an international transfer with his current employer. Together, Blaine and his coach discussed, and then agreed on, the following plan: 1. Blaine would ask his line manager to arrange an appraisal meeting. 2. Blaine had a healthy employee record and had worked for the company for 8 years. 3. Therefore, at the meeting Blaine would reaffirm his commitment to the company and also express a keen desire to be transferred to an overseas placement. 4. Blaine would ask his manager what he could do to achieve this goal within the next 3 years. 5. Blaine would use this feedback to guide his future decisions / actions, in order to achieve his set goal. Please “Like and Share”.
