25 JANUARY Daily Readings 1. Genesis 41 2. Psalms 45 3. Matthew 27 Stay in the land “As evening approached, Joseph, a rich a rich man from Arimathea who had become a follower of Jesus, went to Pilate and asked for Jesus” body.” Matthew 27:57(NLT) Joseph did not care about his own reputation or his safety. While many of the other followers of Jesus were afraid and in hiding, Joseph chose to follow his heart and perform one last act of worship – to remove Jesus’ broken body from the cross, cover its nakedness and bury it properly. To do so meant that his status as a follower of Christ, who had just been executed as a criminal, would be known to all. He firstly had to request permission from Pilate, the highest authority in the area, and once that had been received, he had to retrieve the body from the Roman soldiers guarding it and transport it, in full view of everyone, to the tomb he had had prepared from himself. It was a tomb fitting for a man of his wealth and position – one carved out of the rock and with a large stone which could be rolled into a carved out rut to seal the tomb from grave-robbers. He made himself of no reputation and gave generously in order to do what he believed was right for his Lord. Are we willing to do the same? Cheryl Watson Prayer: “Dear Heavenly Father, let me be as bold as Joseph, even in uncertain times, to let my worship and love for you be known, and not to consider my reputation among men. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.”
