26 June 2013 Press statement by Wanita MCA Chairman, Dato’ Yu Chok Tow Wanita MCA is unable to accept High Court’s decision to release rape and murder suspect Wanita MCA disagrees with the decision by the High Court to acquit suspect Shahril Jaafar of the murder of Chee Gaik Yap seven years ago. The family members of the deceased had waited patiently for seven years for justice to be fulfilled and Wanita MCA understands their distraught and anger at seeing the suspect being acquitted and discharged so easily. As such, we strongly urge the courts to review and evaluate the evidence again from all angles as to the cause of death. This is because it was determined beyond question from police reports that the suspect’s semen was indeed found in the victim’s body, regardless of whether he murdered her or not. Thus, due to this fact we urge that the suspect be punished accordingly and be charged for manslaughter, rape and under other related laws. He should not be let off so easily and a fair verdict must be to ease the hearts of the family members of the deceased. We cannot simply sit around helplessly and watch this happen. The Attorney-General’s Chambers should review the case and to cover any loopholes in the law to prevent such further incidents from happening again. Wanita MCA is greatly concern over the law in regards to women’s safety and as such criminals should not be cleared of guilt so easily. This is to prevent more cases like this from happening as well as to ensure the safety of all Malaysian women. Dato Yu Chok Tow Wanita MCA Chairman / End
