#27 1986 was a relatively quiet year for me. The previous year of transition put me in a place where I could concentrate on what I needed to do. I worked hard on catching up on school work so that I could graduate only a year late as opposed to two years late. When I wasnt riding motorcycles, shooting guns, playing basketball or practicing singing, my remaining time was spent in the trenches of spiritual warfare. I dutifully went out with church groups to minister to the masses, attended morning prayer sessions, and did my best to live the example I was preaching. Most of my music consisted of the CCM variety: Amy Grant, Petra, Michael W. Smith, 2nd Chapter of Acts, and many other christian artists. It wasnt long before the itch for rock and roll came back, so I started seeking out christian music acts that were less praise oriented and more worldly sounding. In 1985 Lost Boys hit the big screen... I missed it, being that I was a tad preoccupied with living 10 miles from the nearest civilization. In 1987, a gospel singer named Russ Taft decided to add a slightly harder edge to his music, presumably to make his ministry more acceptable to a younger crowd. I had no idea he was actually doing a cover of a secular song, but his rendition of a song from the Lost Boys soundtrack was really quite good. It started with just the bass, followed by drums and eventually guitar, keyboard and vocals; it then built to a dynamic crescendo on the chorus with the appropriate amount of sing-along parts for the audience to participate in. More importantly, it lacked the blatant Christian overtones found in much of the christian music I listed to. It felt more worldly, but it was from Russ Taff, a well known christian musician respected by most, and frankly... nobody could challenge that mans convictions.
