27 January 1994: Desmond Doherty, 51-year-old Catholic civilian, married with 3 children was from Ballysooragh, Belcoo. Around 1:00AM he was shot by UDA/UFF gunmen who burst into the house where he was staying. Mr Doherty was hit in the head and died immediately at the scene. Mr Dohertys neighbours said a woman was screaming and then heard 2 shots. In a statement later issued by the UFF, they said they intended to kill a member of the IRAs GHQ staff. They were implicit in the statement that Mr Doherty was not their intended target. Mr Doherty was also not mentioned in the UFF statement. At the June inquest into Mr Doherty’s killing, a detective said Mr Dohertys killing was purely a sectarian attack. He added that: I have made extensive inquiries into the background of Mr Doherty and he was a respected man, a totally innocent man. LEST WE FORGET!
