28 Nov 2013 / 7-9pm In conjunction with Personal Work | Photography Workshop with Zhuang Wubin, as part of Run Amok Gallery s public talk series, Zhuang Wubin will be conducting a talk on the subject of A Timeline of Art Photography in Southeast Asia since the 1950s The relationship between photography and art in Southeast Asia has been defined very narrowly. As a result, certain photographic practices have been privileged as art while others have been written off as salon photography or documentation. In the first half of the presentation, Zhuang Wubin will argue for the need to re-evaluate the canonization process and to re-contextualize what is modern art photography from the region by citing specific series of work. Following this trajectory, Zhuang will look at the proliferation of different photographic practices since the 1970s, triggered by various factors, including the onset of conceptualism, economic progress and the gradual dismantling of dictatorial structures, and posit that all of these practices should be absorbed under the rubric of contemporary photography. - Zhuang Wubin.
