28 November 1976: Frank McConnellogue, 46-year-old Catholic civilian, married with 10 children was from Kildara Terrace, Lecky Road in Londonderrys Bogside area. Mr. McConnellogue was killed in an IRA booby-trap bomb explosion in an alleyway in the Brandywell area. The IRA said they planted the bomb in an alleyway and it was intended for the security forces. After admitting responsibility and apologising, the IRA said in a statement that when they realised the plan had failed they contacted the army and a local priest. People in the area were warned by soldiers and the priest to stay away from the area. It was believed that Mr McConnellogue had gone into the alleyway to warn 2 men who had ignored earlier warnings. He was killed instantly and the 2 men were injured. Mr McConnellogue was a member of the Bogside Community Association and was the secretary of the County (London) Derry Community Games Committee. He was well known for his youth work. In November 1979, a house in Tremore used for community work, was named in Mr McConnellogues honour. He was involved in planning the project before his death.
