Next week we are meeting at the parking lot daily at 7:30 3. Not sure if Vince has mentioned this yet but we are offering a break from construction in honour of attending the following event. UNBC/CNC information panel on the Tsilhqotin ruling - July 9th 11:30 am- 1 pm -- Panel to look at implications of Tsilhqotin Supreme Court Ruling CNC and UNBC are co-hosting a diverse panel of guest speakers to provide perspectives on the possible social, economic and political implications of the recent Tsilhqotin Supreme Court Ruling. The public is invited to hear guest panelists such as Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dominic Frederick and Carrier Sekani Tribal Chief Terry Teegee. The panel will also include Mavis Erickson, a respected local Aboriginal lawyer and activist for Aboriginal women’s rights, and others. In June, the Supreme Court of Canada granted declaration of Aboriginal title to more than 1,700 square kilometres of land in BC to the Tsilhqotin First Nation, the first time the court has made such a ruling regarding Aboriginal land. The ruling is being called a watershed moment as it provides important clarification over what having Aboriginal title means and how it will affect resource development projects. “Understanding that time will be needed for legal analysis and interpretation, it is important to begin the dialogue in a positive way and leave the door open for further discussions as more information becomes available,” said Marlene Erickson, CNC Acting Director Aboriginal Education. “This ruling comes at a time that many First Nations face a crisis in education and employment, which is only magnified by the booming resource development in the North. The Tsilhqotin ruling will forge a new relationship between Canada, British Columbia and First Nations.” The event will take place Wednesday July 9 from 11:30 am to 1 pm at CNC Gathering Place
