3 Devils provided extra inspiration in big victory over Toronto Maple Leafs. Gionta, Henrique and Gomez. 1. Stephen Gionta played with a badly bruised foot, having been hit while blocking a shot in Pittsburgh Tuesday night. With the team needing bodies, he played and scored a goal. “It was all based on the (morning) skate,” Gionta revealed. “I went out for a twirl kind of before it started, to test it out. We decided to get off (the ice) and save it for tonight.” “I went out and took a couple of hard laps and a couple of stops and starts to make sure it was good,” Gionta explained. “We talked to make sure I could get through the game tonight. It was a decision we made this morning.” 2. With Patrik Elias sidelined by a groin injury, Adam Henrique was given an ‘A’ as the third alternate captain (with Andy Greene and Mike Cammalleri). He also scored a goal. “The guys that we have in the room and wear the letters, obviously veteran guys who have been around the league for a long time, I’ve just tried to learn from them,” Henrique said. “To have the letter was pretty special. For it to be here, too, made it that much better. “I just tried to play hard and not change anything. I try to lead by example and go out there and play hard. It was a pretty neat feeling.” Henrique is from Ontario. He will probably be the Devils captain some day. 3. Gomez has already become a leader on the team. After just two games, several of his teammates singled him out for his vocal presence before games like Thursday night.
