3 Things On The Coolness of Knowing Your Neighbours 1. For the first time in a long time - I know my neighbours. I never really thought about it before - I mean always a friendly smile for other people in the building, or a familiar face on the sidewalk, but actually knowing my neighbours never really entered my mind. In my neighbourhood its kind of unavoidable. Going for a simple walk to the store almost always involves a brief conversation with someone…Its like I realized I missed something I didnt know I missed…I imagine its what home feels like. 2. I have been watching the neighbours kids grow up for the last 4 years. I can tell their voices when they scream and yell in the park across the street…its music really. They draw on the sidewalk with chalk, demand other kids listen to them, and the little girl dresses like a princess most of the time. I mean really dresses like a princess. I called her your majesty once and bowed with reverence to her. Her 8 year old face looked at me with the solemn wisdom of a monarch and gave me a silent nod…as a princess would do for her benign subject. It made me feel like a knight. 3. They have events - the other day there was a Free Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. They blocked off the whole street, played music, and had a booth set up where they made grilled cheese sandwiches all day long…including vegan/gluten free (yes its possible). They do this every year. Laughing, dancing and eating grilled cheese sandwiches. Sometimes my life really does feel like a movie…maybe a romantic comedy…with a different romance…the kind of romance that makes me smile as I catch the scent of late summer blossoms and grilled cheese while shaking my corporeal form to the wacky sounds of Skrillex. I love you all
