3 arrested in Arua for bribery Three people are in police custody at Arua Central Police Station after being arrested by the Inspectorate of Government for taking bribes. Hillary Alioni, a lab assistant and Dennis Azizua, a lab volunteer at Arua Regional Referral Hospital were arrested on Wednesday July 17th 2013 for soliciting a bribe from a patient. The patient, who lodged a complaint with the Inspectorate of Government’s Arua Regional Office, said Alioni asked for sh7000 to perform tests on his samples in the lab. IG investigators in Arua used the bribe Alioni had asked for as bait for his arrest. On the fateful day Alioni was not available at the lab and Dennis Azizua received the bribe money on his behalf. The lab volunteer, who was on his first day at work was arrested for receiving the money and Alioni was also arrested the following day for soliciting a bribe from a patient. Hillary Alioni accepted that he asked for the bribe but the IG investigators also found that he recently worked as a volunteer at Arua Regional Referral Hospital, but is now officially an employee of the same hospital. In a related development, on Friday July 19th 2013, the IG also arrested Arua District Staff Surveyor, Gad Aziku, for soliciting a sh400,000 bribe from the Managing Director of Nile Technical Services based in Arua. The MD submitted two survey reports with blue prints to Aziku to write a letter to the Town Clerk requesting for the re-planning of the two plots of land located within a road reserve, as he wanted to put up a building. Aziku demanded for the bribe for his services prompting the MD to report the matter to the IG. The IG investigators then set a trap to catch Aziku red-handed receiving the bribe money. Aziku was arrested on Friday morning for receiving a bribe, which he said was meant for transport to the site for inspection. The site is not far from his office. The suspects are yet to be prosecuted.
