30 July 1920--A WONDERFUL OPERATION --The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Farris will rejoice with them over the restoration of the sight of their little daughter, Corrine, who had been totally blind for the past year, her blindness being caused from scars from chickenpox and cataracts. She had been taken to specialist in St. Louis and Kansas City, who pronounced her case hopeless. Several weeks ago Mrs. W. J. Robinson, a friend from Kansas City, who spent a week here at the club house, and was so touched by the child’s affliction that she insisted that she be allowed to accompany them home, stating that she knew a specialist who might be able to do her some good, and of course the parents gave their consent. His report was favorable, when Mrs. Robinson made a special trip to Higbee to tell the parents the good news, warning them at the same time that there was nothing certain about it. The operation was performed last week and word came that it would likely be a success if no complications set in. A few days later a message came from Mrs. Robinson that Corrine was doing nicely and could distinguish colors. Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. Farris were made happier than they ever were before by the receipt of the following letter from Mrs. Robinson: “Dear Mrs. Farris: This will be about the last time I will have to write you, as Dr. Thompson thinks Corrine can come home Sunday or Monday. “I took her down to his office yesterday and he said the operation was a success far beyond his expectations. “Her eye improves every day and in a month’s time will be so she can see better than she ever has before. He thinks she will be able to go back to school again this fall. She goes around the house by herself, up and down the stairs, out on the porch and in the yard and can see everything when looking at it closely. “Of course she is doing all this without glasses, so when she is fitted, which will be Saturday, she will be able to see without getting things up close. “At the hospital where Corrinne was operated on they are just crazy about her case--all the faculty and Sisters and nurses think it is marvelous that she improved so rapidly. Dr. Homel and Dr. Thompson too, are very proud of their success. They certainly have given her every attention. Dr. Homel was here again this morning. “She is so happy she goes around all day singing and smiling. She is planning all the time how she will help mamma this winter. Mary Frances and a little girl named Floy took her to Troost Park where they are going to play tennis. “Now do not expect us until you hear from me. Doctor may want me to keep her over a few days longer after he puts the glasses on her, so I will have Mr. Robinson wire Mr. Thomason when we leave here. She, of course, wants to come home and show you how she can see, but she is not homesick.” The doctor states that the other eye can be operated on in about a year, and that he has great hopes of fully restoring the sight to it also.
