326 Cannon Office Building (202) 225-1555 September 25, 2013 Ms. Helen Delarue 1006 W Orange Avenue Orange, TX 77630-5031 Dear Ms. Delarue, Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding the important issue of ObamaCare. I am unequivocally opposed to the government takeover of the health care system. Even before its implementation, ObamaCare has sent health insurance premiums skyrocketing and resulted in the loss of many American jobs. The “public option” provision, the heart of ObamaCare, will force tens of millions of employees out of their private healthcare plans and into a government-run plan. Simply because many employers will make the decision for their employees. The employer mandate in ObamaCare is a job killing machine. Forcing employers with more than 50 full-time employees – defined as those working more than 30 hours per week – to provide health insurance or pay stiff penalties has led employers to cut both the number of employees and the number of hours worked. According to Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Director Doug Elmendorf, ObamaCare will result in an estimated 800,000 fewer American jobs. President Obama’s decision to delay the imposition of the employer mandate by a year is a tacit admission of the negative impact his law will have on the job market. I support extending the same delay for the individual mandate – but ultimately making the delay permanent. Economics aside, I believe that forcing people to purchase a product or service is blatantly unconstitutional. Allowing the federal government to coerce individuals into purchasing a service “for their own good,” I’m afraid there will be no end to federal intrusion into our private lives. Furthermore, the Supreme Court has ruled that the ObamaCare “penalties” are in fact taxes. Since revenue raising bills must originate in the House, and ObamaCare was first passed by the Senate, the law is in violation of Constitution’s origination clause. Yet another negative impact of ObamaCare will be to further increase the burden of our expanding national debt, despite the president’s promise to the contrary. According to the non-partisan Government Accounting Office, the long-term federal debt will increase by $6.2 trillion. Even the New York Times admits that efforts to cut ObamaCare costs results in “significantly limiting the choices of doctors and hospitals available to consumers.” Despite cutting off your access to health care, a Manhattan Institute analysis of government data finds that under the new law insurance premiums for women will rise by an average of 62% and an average of 99% for men. For these reasons and more, I am working not only to stop the spread of ObamaCare, but to defund it entirely and replace it with market based solutions that respect your individual rights and your privacy. In addition to voting and cosponsoring legislation to defund ObamaCare, I also authored House Resolution 333, which states that the House shall pass no debt ceiling increase or continuing budget resolution to fund the government unless ObamaCare funding is expressly prohibited. As you can see, I am opposed to government invasion of personal freedoms not only in words, but actions as well. As long as I am in office I will continue to fight for individual liberties as outlined by our Founding Fathers. Again, thank you for writing me. Warmest Wishes, Steve Stockman U.S. Representative 36th District of Texas
