365 days of music you need to know...Day 22/365 Its on my mind now, since I read earlier today that our friends at Surly Brewing Company released a beer they brewed in collaboration with 1349 (Official). 1349 are a Black Metal band from Norway (Oslo, specifically), first formed in 1997. There have been various explanations as to the origin of the bands name over the years, and most things I recall reading upon them breaking into the states in the early 2000s was that 1349 AD was the year Christian missionaries first visited the Norse countries and began to chip away at the pagan culture that existed in an attempt to assimilate the population. Cool story, bro, but its wrong. 1349 is a reference to the year the Black Death, or Bubonic Plague, finally reached Norway, infecting and killing countless people. Thats a pretty metal name, then isnt it? \m/ I dig these guys because the majority of their albums sound like more traditional, old-school black metal. Lots of treble. Ridiculously fast pacing. Shit-load of minor chords. Time signatures that appear to be all over the map. Etc. Etc. Etc. Their corpsepaint tends to be on the goofier side, but the dude in the robe is a badass. This song, Slaves, is from their newest album, released just last year on Season of Mist and entitled Massive Cauldron of Chaos... I think something might be lost in the translation, but its quite brilliant. Its that OS black metal din, slightly polished for a bigger, more bombastic sound. Plus, since most black metal sounds like it was recorded in a cave, the video actually features them playing in a cave... https://youtube/watch?v=ajvLJPzgL_o
