#375 “Praise him, praise Him, Jesus our blessed redeemer” (Allen) W: Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915) M: Chester G. Allen (1838-1878) Here we have another of the immensely popular hymns of Fanny Crosby who wrote the tune to “Blessed Assurance”. You’ll remember that, despite her blindness, she was a lyricist, composer, mission worker, preacher and teacher. She was considered the “Queen of the Gospel Song Writers” and had an immense impact on North American hymnody. She wrote over 8000 hymns, sometimes as Fanny Crosby and sometimes using one of 200 pseudonyms. Composer Chester G. Allen was one of those quietly busy people, it would seem. There isn’t that much written about him but he is noted as a teacher, composer, editor and music commentator.
