376 miles today, 741 for the trip. Houston to St. Francisville, LA. If there is a Waffle House nearby, I just gotta get breakfast there. Eschewing the instant coffee and wrapped sweet roll at the motel, I drove 1/2 mile for my eggs, bacon, grits, toast and waffle. I could have ordered it with extra grease, but this was perfect. Normally, I dont ride Interstates, but its hard to get from Houston to Galveston without riding I-45. Played with some rain showers, but nothing serious. By the time I got to the ferry landing to go to the Bolivar Peninsula (Google map it), the sun was out. That changed while in the ship channel. Some rain clouds the color of dust bunnies rolled over, but nothing came out. At the northern end of the Bolivar Peninsula, there are big signs directing you to turn, though you can see that a road once existed along the shore. Hurricane Rita took out that road, and it was never rebuilt. Ive talked to some dirt bike guys who have ridden the old road, and they say the asphalt still remains in some areas. On over to Post Arthur, Texas, then I crossed the Sabine River into Louisiana. The area is an interesting blend of petrochemical plants, off shore rigs and fishing boats. Riding through Cameron, I smelled fresh seafood and oil - at the same time. By coincidence, Id had dinner last night with a gentleman who once flew helicopters with the old South Vietnamese Air Force, then later flew them from Cameron out to the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Rita did a job on the area. New buildings are constructed on stilts now - even churches. I checked the elevation on my GPS and noted that the highest I ever got while on the coastal rode was 10 feet - and also 5 feet below sea level. Had a nice lunch in Creole (not much in Creole except the restaurant), then just cruised the rest of the day, arriving a little after dark. Evening comes early in the northern lands. ;) Life is very very good.
