4:07 PM EDT Monday 31 March 2014 Freezing rain warning in effect for: Timmins - Cochrane Little Abitibi - Kesagami Lake Fraserdale - Pledger Lake Kapuskasing - Hearst - Smooth Rock Falls Major winter storm with freezing rain tonight into Tuesday. An intense low pressure system over Minnesota is expected to track northeast and develop into a major winter storm as it reaches Lake Superior Tuesday. Current information suggests precipitation will move into the Thunder Bay area late this afternoon and continue during the night. For areas close to Lake Superior precipitation is likely to fall as a mix of rain and freezing rain. Freezing rain or rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 mm are possible before precipitation changes over to snow Tuesday afternoon. For areas further inland a mixture of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain is more likely. This area of freezing rain will move into the Kapuskasing area by Tuesday morning. Travellers should consider changing their plans as driving conditions will quickly deteriorate and become hazardous with the rain and freezing rain causing slippery conditions on untreated surfaces.
