4:15 am Farm Report Farm. Market. Farm. In between the chores of the farm, is the work at the market, in town. The idea behind the market was to create a space where small farms could sell their products most days of the week. Other goods were added to compliment the farm products and help add more of a small town grocery atmosphere. Somewhere between the roadside vegetable stands and large chain stores, there should be room for this model of the market. Thats the idea that launched the market. I have been the farmer at farmers markets, participated in CSAs and helped run a roadside stand. None of those models really worked for me, in a way that could support the farm. Help support it, yes. Bring awareness of locally grown food and help make the connection between what you eat and the producer. Yes. But make a living, no. My situation, as a farmer is not unique. Many small farms rely heavily on the income of one or more family members working that off farm job to keep farming. The market has been no different than the farm. It exists because of the generosity of friends and loyal customers, believing as I believe, that there is room for this model. But squeaking along is incredibly stressful. After much consideration, I have decided to make a change at the market. As of the end of the month, we will no longer make sandwiches, while you wait. We will keep our value added products, like the soups and occasional carry out entrees, if time and space allow. Why do this? Removing this aspect of the market, will bring us back to our original mission of being your market. It will reduce our labor and material costs as we enter the slower, winter months and allow for additional product space. Change is not always easy. Some of you may be disappointed with my decision. But know, that the commitment to work as hard as possible to bring as much locally grown and raised product to you remains the same. This change needs to happen for us to see if somewhere between the road side stands and large chain stores, there is room for this small town market. Time for chores.... Im off to the barn. Ill be back later.
