4/6/14 Not Ashamed - A Study of the Book of Romans. Mission: The Gospel ~ Romans 1 Part Three Pauls Confidence: Romans 1:16-17 by Dr. Joe K. Taylor, Senior Pastor, South Reno Baptist Church REVIEW: A. The gospel of Jesus Christ was Paul’s single motivation in life B. It is the gospel—received by faith—that saves us. It is NOT our works that save us C. The pretrial information: 1. His credentials (Paul’s ministry); 2. His Christ (Paul’s message); and (3) His Church (Paul’s motivation) Background for this Text: (Understanding the culture of that day) A. The moral conditions of that day were terrible. B. The fact that Paul was a Jew didn’t help him. C. The fact that Paul presented a ‘gospel’ that seemed far-fetched didn’t help. D. Everywhere Paul went preaching the cross; he was ridiculed, cast out, imprisoned, or treated cruelly: • Imprisoned in Philippi (Acts 16:23ff) • Chased out of Thessalonica (Acts 17:10ff) • Smuggled out of Berea (Acts 17:14ff) • Mocked in Athens (Acts 17:32ff) • Called a fool in Corinth (1 Cor. 1:18ff) • Stoned in Galatia (Acts 14:19ff) After all this, Paul is now eager to preach in Rome—seat of political power and pagan religion. Paul’s Confidence: He was not “ashamed of the Gospel” for two reasons: 1. The Gospel revives men’s lives (salvation) 2. The Gospel reveals God’s love (forgiveness) The Court Record (Continued) 4. His Confidence (Paul’s motivation) A. The Gospel is marked by a sovereign __Power__. STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 1:16a, HCSB - 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power [Gk: dunamis from which we get the words “dynamic” and “dynamite”; it refers to “might”, “energy”, “strength”] for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew who had the first shot, and also then to the Greek. B. The Gospel is marked by a singular __Purpose__. STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 1:16b, HCSB - 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation [Gk: sōtêria (lit., to lower a hand) meaning “to find safety”, “to find deliverance” in a spiritual sense] to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. C. The Gospel is marked by a simple __Plan___. STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 1:16c, HCSB - 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes [Gk: pisteuō, (lit., believes; rf., pistus meaning faith) carries the idea of “trusting in”, “relying on”, “having faith in” God and never giving up], first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. D. The Gospel is marked by a satisfying __Payoff__. Romans 1:17, HCSB - 17 For in it the gospel, God’s righteousness [Gk: dikaioayné, lit., “justice”, “fairness”, God’s “right-ness”] is revealed [meaning experienced] from beginning faith to ending faith*, just as it is written: The righteous [that’s us—those who believe by faith] will live by faith [the HCSB boldfaces all OT quotes]. *As Christians, we (1) have been saved (justified; Titus 3:5); (2) are being saved (sanctified, 1 Thess. 5:23); and (3) will be saved (glorified, Rom. 13:11) by our personal faith in God. Life Application Section: “What does salvation ‘save’ us from?” 1. A Christian is saved from sin’s penalty (doom)—Justification. 2. A Christian is saved from sin’s power (dominion)—Sanctification. 3. A Christian is saved from sin’s presence (domain)—Glorification. HERE IS THE POINT ------> “It is a ‘faith response’ in God that saves. Faith is not only the starting point of salvation—it’s the staying power of the “Christian walk.” Theological Summary: It is “good news” to know that when God moved to do something about our sin, He exercised His power in sending His son to pay the price for our sin and give each of us the opportunity to be rescued from our sin—to Himself—by faith in Him.
